Foundation hosting 5K that promises to ‘beat the heat’

COOKEVILLE – The “Summer Splash 5K,” a unique 5K race in the Upper Cumberland region, will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, near the Dogwood Park pavilion. Proceeds from the race, which measures 3.1 miles, will help local cancer patients with a variety of charitable needs.

The Summer Splash 5k is unlike any other race in our region, organizers say, offering participants opportunities to cool off along the course at “misting” and “drenching” stations. Optional misting stations offer a cool mist for racers to pass through, while optional drenching stations are manned by volunteers prepared with water-guns, hoses and buckets. Run or walk, participants will get wet.

5KRacelogo2015“With the heat being so incredible this summer, we think everyone will enjoy the Summer Splash 5K,” Ali Bagci, race planning committee chairman, said.

Presented by sponsor L.G. Puckett, DDS, the Summer Splash 5K will also include entertainment before and during the race at the Dogwood Park pavilion. “Step-N-Out” will perform beginning at 5 p.m. The race will follow at 6. Concessions will be available in the park, and a food truck will be on-site.

Proceeds from the Summer Splash 5K will go toward the Cancer Fund at Cookeville Regional Charitable Foundation in honor and memory of Sarah Alice Bagci. The Cancer Fund provides assistance to local cancer patients who struggle with necessities while dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

“I am truly grateful to race sponsors, planning committee members, and the many racers who will be participating,” John Bell, director of Cookeville Regional Charitable Foundation, said. “The Cancer Fund helps hundreds of local cancer patients with both critical and basic necessities, and we need events like the Summer Splash 5K to ensure that funds are available when there is need.”

Registration for one runner is $35. Registration for a team of four is $120. Event details and a link to the Active.com race registration may be found at www.CookevilleRegionalCharity.org. For more information, call Ali Bagci at (931) 783-5793.

In addition to L.G. Puckett DDS, drench station sponsors include Foothills Running Company, Compass Advisory Group, and Dr. Spence and Leigh Madell.
